Following Instructions

We listened carefully to instructions so we could make
fruit kebabs. We had lots of fun deciding what order we
would place our ingredients and comparing our efforts with
our friends.

Water Safety

Room 14, along with the rest of the Pukeko had a very special visitor today!

Jan came along to talk to us about keeping safe in the water

We learnt all about life jackets:
- how we know when they are safe
- What they are made from
- What different types of life jackets look like and how they work
- What life jackets looked like in history

Uh oh it looks like Cayden's Life Jacket is to big! What would happen if he was wearing this in the water?

Next we learnt about hypothermia

- We learnt what hypothermia means
- What hypothermia looks like
- How hypothermia happens
- What to do if we start to get to cold in the ocean

Cover your heart with your hands!

Huddle up to stay warm!

Room 14 getting stuck into sport!

This term we have been busy developing skills in physical education with our focus being on large ball skills. The last two weeks we have been extending our skills in basketball and we are becoming very confident!

We have learnt
-Where our feet should be when passing and how to use them to make our pass more successful.
-How to throw using a chest pass.
- How to catch a ball coming from different directions.
- How to defend the ball
- How to move into space when being defended.

Measurement

In Room 14 this term we have been busy learning about different types of measurement.
Measurement encompasses a large range of areas including temperature, time , length, mass and volume. Because there is so much to learn in this subject area this term we will be zooming in on two areas in particular including time and length

We started our unit with a what we already know activity this was lots of fun as we had to search around the class to find different stations and then work with our group to work out the correct answer

We had 5 stations:
- Clock
-Measuring Jugs
- Thermometer
- Scales
-Ruler

During this activity we had to think about what each item measured, what it was called,  and what unit we measured it in. It was very challenging but we worked together and tried our best!

How you can help with our learning at home
-Sing the months of the year song to help your child to remember the order of the months.
- Look at a calendar with your child talk about important dates in the family such as birthdays and pop them on the calendar.
- Encourage your child to help you read the time ask questions such as what number is the big hand on? What number is the small hand on?

Our Technology Expo

On Thursday of week 11, room 14 was buzzing with excitement, not because it was the last day of term but because we would finally be showcasing our work to our parents, friends, and relatives! This term we had started and completed and authentic inquiry starting first with exploring concerns and dilemma's which you can see in our earlier post and then setting about finding out. During our finding out process we researched other's ideas, planned initial designs, collected data from existing spaces around the school, and discussed our ideas with our classmates and Miss Henderson. After collecting all of the information and ideas we needed we set about applying our ideas - This was the fun part-
We first found other people in our class with similar ideas as ours and formed a group, next we started our next phase of planning where we learnt how to draw from a birds-eye-view and included details such as measurements ( Dimensions). We then took our individual plans and collaborated to work out how we could combine them into one successful plan this was a challenge as it was hard to all agree on parts of our design! Once we had competed our final design we finally got to set about making our model ! Some students then briefed their ideas to Miss Harland and had to explain and justify their thinking, they did very well - Miss Harland was very impressed and went away with many interesting ideas for our school environment!

We would like to thank all of the parents, grandparents, aunties, uncles, brothers, sisters and friends who came along to our expo, if you were not able to make it we hope you enjoy watching the video of our process!

Well Done Lucy

This weekend while we were busy eating easter eggs and relaxing with our family, Lucy set off to Tauranga for the BMX nationals, qualifying for this was an achievement in itself !  Lucy came 3rd meaning she is ranked 3rd in all of New Zealand for her age group. This is an amazing achievement well done Lucy, I'm sure the Room 14 students look forward to hearing all about the competition and seeing your trophy!

Technology Through Inquiry

In Room 14 we have been very busy over the last few weeks learning how to question.
We Learnt
- What a question is
- How to ask a question
- What different types of questions look like and how they work

We used our new understanding of question asking to begin the 'wonder' aspect of our inquiry.
Students had a go at asking questions about our school grounds by thinking of problems or dilemma's
from this we looked at the area of our school that we related too and discussed the most and began to think about why it was a problem and how we could solve it.
Here is our wonder wall

stay tuned to find out where we go next...

Week 5's Homefun

This week I have introduced spelling to the homefun, all spelling words are based on the essential spelling list and are high frequency words children use in their writing. The students have been grouped according to words they need to learn and will be getting 5 words to learn each week. This is a manageable number of words and has been decided upon across the Pukeko team.
One of the tasks that will be set this year for spelling is spelling city - this is a fun and interactive way for student to learn their words. Spelling City has two sections, we will be using the free activities that do not require a login or password.
Below I have included some screenshots and instructions to show you how to use this website.
When you first visit the page this is what you will see. It gives you the option to add more words, click on add 1 until you have 5 spaces to enter your words.

Enter your child's words here, I suggest you do this or supervise your child doing this to ensure they are spelt correctly, otherwise they may be learning to spell the words incorrectly.

After entering the words click on any of the free activities buttons below.
it will take you to a screen like the one above.

Have fun :)
If you have trouble with this or anymore questions regarding the homefun or spelling program please do not hesitate to contact me.
